1. Anatomy Terminology (Planes & Directional) Flashcards
What is the median plane?
Divides the body into equal left and right halves
What is the Sagittal plane?
Divides the body into left and right parts that are not necessarily equal
What is the transverse plane?
Divides the body into cranial and caudal parts
What is the dorsal plane?
Divides the body into dorsal and ventral parts
What does cranial mean?
Toward the head ; or the front surface of a limb proximal to the carpus or tarsus
What does caudal mean?
Toward the tail; also the back surface of a limb proximal to the carpus or tarsus
What does rostral mean?
Toward the tip of the nose
What does dorsal mean?
Toward the top surface of the body ; also the top/front surface of a limb distal to the carpus or tarsus
What does ventral mean?
Toward the bottom (belly) surface of the body
What does medial mean?
Toward the median plane
What does lateral mean?
Away from the median plane
What does deep mean?
Toward the centre of the body or a body part
What does proximal mean?
Toward the body (used for appendages)
What does distal mean?
Away from the body (used for appendages)
What does palmar mean?
Ground/back surface of forelimb distal to carpus
What does plantar mean?
Ground/back surface of hindlimb distal to the tarsus
What is meant by Extension?
Increasing the angle formed by a hinge joint
What is meant by Flexion?
Decreasing the angle formed by a hinge joint
What is meant by abduction?
Movement of the limb away from the body (midline)
What is meant by adduction?
Movement of the limb towards the body (midline)
What is meant by Supination?
What is the terminology used for the pelvic limb?
Rotation of the thoracic limb so the dorsum of the manus is turned laterally
(Pelvic limb = outward rotation)
What is meant by pronation?
What is the terminology used for the pelvic limb?
Rotation of the thoracic limb so the dorsum of the manus is turned medially
(Pelvic limb = inward rotation)
