What is the RN role when collecting patient from PACU?
- Pain management

What is the RN role when patient is back on the surgical ward?
- Orientate them
- Call bell accessible
- Vital signs (every 30min for 2 hours, 1 hourly for 2 hours)
- Food and fluids
- Mobilisation
What is the ongoing care once back on the ward?
- Pain management
- Mobilising more independently
- Regaining function
- Education
- Referrals (OT, PT)
- Wound healing promotion
- Education about infection
- Adequate home support.
What is a bowel resection and why?
-Removal of any part of the bowel. (SI, LI & Rectum)
Why are the serious consequences of a bowel resection necessary?
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Blood clots
What is Cholecystitis/ cholecystectomy?
-Caused by interruption in the normal flow of bile. It is the most common complication of gallstones.
What are some complications of a Cholecystitis/ cholecystectomy?
- Bile leak.
- Bleeding.
- Infection.
What is Diverticular disease?
-Small bulges in the large intestine developing and becoming inflamed.
What are symptoms of Diverticular disease?
- Pain
- Constipation
- Blood in the stool.
What are complications of Diverticular disease surgery?
- Blood clots
- Surgical site infection
- Haemorrhage (internal bleeding)
- Sepsis (an infection throughout your body)
