Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott
Was Paul Revere arrested the night of his ride?
Yes, he was arrested. They ended up letting him go later on in the night.
Who was at the Battle of Lexington
British troops vs. Colonist troops
Captain John Parker+ 60-70 minutemen - Colonies’ side
When was Lexington?
April 19th, 1775
- although it was during the night, it was april 19 not 18 because it was past midnight by the time the fighting began.
What happened at Lexington?
British yell “Drop your weapons” -> there ends up being one shot - the “shot heard ‘round the world” - although nobody knows from which side it was actually from.
-8 colonial men died + 10 were injured
When was the Battle of Concord?
the night (early early morning-past midnight) of April 19, 1775
Who was at Concord?
British troops vs. Patriot/Colonist Minutemen(4,000)
+ Captain John Parker (colonies)
What happened at Concord?
The British came storming in, while being slowed down by Patriots soldiers - they were up in the trees throwing rocks and glass down onto the British troops to stall them so that the rest of the minutemen soldiers could keep moving artillery out of the big barn -they ended up getting away with two cannons, the Adams and the Hancock, as well as some ammunition, but definitely not enough. - the rest was destroyed by the British after they got across the bridge.
When was Fort Ticonderoga?
May 10th, 1775
Who was at Fort Ticonderoga?
Ethan Allen + The Green Mountain Boys
General Benedict Arnold -> ended up not getting credit for being a part of the battle and was really salty about it :(
What happened at Ticonderoga?
The battle was only 45 minutes long -start to finish- They allied with the French (although it was just to put something cool in the newspaper - and to not mention any credit for Gen. Arnold! wth!) -> they couldn’t actually pull the cannons out of the fort until december ->it was may.
It was a win for the continental army!!
Why did they go to Fort Ticonderoga?
To steal cannons + British tried to capture Americans
When was the Battle of Bunker HIll/Breed’s Hill?
May 25, 1775 - Generals are sent to Boston
June 17, 1775 - actual fighting
Who was at Bunker/Breed’s Hill?
Gen. “Gentleman” Johnny Burgoyne - upperclassman, well-liked
Lt. Gen. Henry Clinton - no regard for human life
Gen. William Howe - doesn’t care who dies (even from his own troops) king’s favorite, was a good gen. but gets beat in the end-> these three get sent to Boston
Colonies: Col. William Prescott
What happened at Bunker/Breed’s Hill?
Prescott was ordered to fortify Bunker Hill, but his engineer suggested that he fortifies Breed’s Hill instead - they do so - although it is not the higher ground, it is the smarter ground
June 17, 1775: Howe wakes up on the boat and sees a redoubt!! He was not expecting this!
Prescott orders “Do not fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” This would conserve the colonists’ ammo and waste the British
Howe had to retreat twice, wasting a lot of ammo already, before Prescott and his men retreated the third time that Howe came around - this third time Howe came with new troops
Colonist/Patriot troops use Bunker Hill to escape/retreat
