Where are brake lights located on a car?
Brake lights are usually located at the rear of a car. They are typically positioned in three main areas:
1. On either side of the rear of the car – These are the main brake lights, usually integrated into the taillight assembly.
2. In the center, above the rear window or trunk – This is called the third brake light (or center high-mounted stop lamp, CHMSL), which provides additional visibility to drivers behind.
When you press the brake pedal, all these lights illuminate to signal that you are slowing down or stopping.
What are taillights for?
Taillights are the red lights located at the rear of a car that turn on whenever the headlights or parking lights are activated. Their main purposes are:
1. Visibility – They help other drivers see your car in low-light conditions, such as at night or in bad weather.
2. Indicating the vehicle’s width and presence – They help drivers behind you gauge the size and position of your car on the road.
3. Safety – They ensure your car is visible from behind, reducing the risk of rear-end collisions.
Unlike brake lights, which light up only when you press the brake pedal, taillights remain on as long as your headlights or parking lights are on.
