2 Flashcards
Refraction
Bending of em waves as they pass from one medium to another with a different optical density. Waves travel at different speeds in different medium due to the density of the material encountered. This occurs due to the change in speed of the wave as it tranverses the boundary between 2 media.
Different material like light. The higher the density fhe
Slower the wave passes through it
If a wave travels from a less dense medium to a more dense material like from air to
Glass, it will slow down as it passes through the glass
Boundaries between 2 medium
If the wave travels perpendicular to the boundary between 2 mediums then it will continue straight on however if the wave hits a boundary at an angle then it will be refracted meaning the direction will change. If it’s passing to a more dense medium like glass then it will bend towards the normal(perpendicular line and straight on)
Our wave speed equation
V (wave speed: m/s) =f(frequency :Hz) lamda(wavelength: m)
The frequency and wavelength changes as the speed of the wave changes from one medium to another.
Our wave speed equation
V (wave speed: m/s) =f(frequency :Hz) lamda(wavelength: m)
The frequency and wavelength changes as the speed of the wave changes from one medium to another.
So if the speed of the wave increases and vice versa
The wavelength will increase and vice versa.
Different wavelength are refracted by different amounts
White light contains all the wavelengths of visible light through a triangular prism then the different colors will bend to different degrees so they all spread out like a rainbow.
