Q

Diffraction

A

Occurs when a wave encounters an obstacle or a small opening causing the wave to change direction and bend around the obstacle or spread through the opening. This results in a change in the wave’s direction and amplitude

Q

Wavelength of diffraction

A

Wavelength is the distance between 2 consecutive peaks or troughs of a wave. Shorter wavelengths result in more pronounced diffraction effects. The size and shape of the obstacle or opening affect the amount of diffraction that occurs

Q

What is diffraction essential for

A

Understanding the behavior of em waves like radio waves and micro waves AND understanding the behavior of particles like electrons as they interact with matter.

Real life example of diffraction

A

Sound diffraction used in audio engineering to design concert halls and loudspeaker systems.

Q

A torch light rays spreads out after

A

Encountering an obstacle and bends around it. Obstacle tries to hold back the accelerating wave
