Overview
Microbiota
Organisms living within and on us (usually not causing disease)
Types of Microbiota
Resident, Transient
Acquisition of Normal Microbiota
None during development in womb; develop during birthing process; much established during first months of life; prevents colonization of harmful bacteria due to good bacteria
Pathogens
Capable of causing disease
Opportunistic Pathogens
Normally do not cause disease but can under unique circumstances
Clostridium difficle
Spore forming and opportunistic pathogen; usually a problem after prolonged antibiotic treatment; fecal transplants help to reestablish good bacteria to fight this
Probiotics
Consumed bacteria that many believe aid in digestive health
Zoonoses
Diseases that naturally spread from animal host to people
Virulence
How effective it is with causing disease or illness
Endemic
Spread around cases of new disease
Pandemic
Worldwide clusters of cases of new disease
