Explain what the Commonwealth/Australian parliament does/is.
The Australian/Commonwealth parliament is a bicameral parliament meaning it has two houses. The parliament is the supreme law-making body in Australia. It is made up of three elements:
- The Queen (represented by the Governor-General)
- The Senate (upper house)
- The House Of Representatives (lower house)
Explain what the senate does/is.
- The upper house in the Australian/commonwealth parliament
- Represents the interests of the states and territories
- Introduces and passes bills
- Reviews bills passed by the house of representatives
Explain what the House of Representatives does/is.
- The upper house in the Australian/commonwealth parliament
- Represents the people
- Introduces and passes bills
- Reviews bills passed by the senate and determines which party forms government.
Explain what the Victorian Parliament does/is.
The Victorian parliament is made of three parts:
1. The Queen (represented by the governor of Victoria)
2. The Legislative Council (upper house)
3. The Legislative Assembly (lower house)
