1c - aerobic, anaerobic and effects of exercise Flashcards
What is anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration in the presence of oxygen
When is aerobic respiration used
In low intensity exercise, e.g. Marathon running
When is anaerobic exercise used?
In high intensity exercise that cannot be sustained for a long portion of time (sprinting)
What is the equation for aerobic exercise?
Glucose + oxygen = energy + carbon dioxide + water
What is the equation for anaerobic exercise?
Glucose = energy + lactic acid
What does EPOC stand for?
Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption
Why does EPOC happen?
To replace the oxygen debt after vigorous exercise. This has to be done to remove waste products such as lactic acid from the body
What are the immediate effects of exercise?
- Increase in HR
- Increase in breath rate
- Body temp increases
- Sweating
What are the short term effects of exercise?
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- DOMS
- Cramp
What does DOMS stand for?
Delayed onset muscle soreness
What are the long term effects of exercise?
- Increase in flexibility
- Muscle hypertrophy
- Change in body shape
- Increase in strength
- Decrease in resting HR
What can you do in a cool down and why?
5-10 mins if light aerobic exercise to decrease body temp and to remove any waste products (lactic acid)
5-10 mins static stretching to help muscles relax and get them back to their normal range of motion
What else can be done in the recovery process?
- Ice baths - to decrease the chance of DOMS
- Rehydration - to prevent nausea
- Massage - to prevent DOMS and cramps
