1b.4 DM - Managing Hazards Flashcards
Identify some immediate responses to tectonic hazards
Search and rescue Emergency services Armed forces assistance Building field hospital Circulating food and water rations Disturbing blankets Evacuating the injured
How do you evaluate the success of EQ management?
Reduction in the number of lives
Less economic damage
How can you design buildings to withstand hazards?
Know a few of these:
Deep foundations attaching the building to the berock
Reinforce gas and water supplies
Use lightweight roofing materials
Include pendulum to reduce sway
Cross bracing - stops floors collapsing / strengthens walls
Double glazed windows, reduces glass breakage
How can you prepare for an earthquake?
Monitoring / prediction
Earthquake drills
Stock pile food / tents / medical supplies
Strengthen buidlings - e.g. shock absorbers, steel frames)
Reinforce transport connections
How do dampers in a roof protect buildings from earthquakes?
They reduce building sway
How does cross bracing protect buildings from earthquakes?
Stops floors collapsing
OR: prevents falling masonry / brickwork
How do lightweight roofs protect buildings from earthquakes?
Collapse will be less hazardous
How do steel rod foundations protect buildings from earthquakes?
They prevent collapse
How can you predict earthquakes?
You can’t!
But you can forecast them, and know when they’ve actually hapenning
How do laser beams help monitor for earthquakes
They detect minor plate movements just before an earthquake
How do seismometers help monitor for earthquakes
Pick up the vibrations / foreshocks in the the Earths’ crust
How does detecting radon gas help monitor for earthquakes
It escapes from the Earth’s crust as the crust moves slightly just before an earthquake
