1a- Water and carbon move between the land, oceans and atmosphere Flashcards

1
Q

slow carbon cycle example

A

organisms with shells fix dissolved carbon with Ca, when they die they sink and are converted into carbon-rich sedimentary rocks

fast carbon cycle example

A

co2 is dissolved into the surface of the ocean and ventilated back into the atmosphere.

Q

inorganic pump of carbon in the ocean

A

vertical currents mix surface and deep ocean water, creates a vertically even carbon distribution. Carried polewards where its cooler so it sinks and stays at the depths via downwelling for centuries until upwelling transports the carbon back up

Q

organic pump of carbon in the ocean

A

carbon is exchanged by marine organisms and 1/2 of all PS happens in the ocean. Marine organisms like Phytoplankton PS, carbon is then moved by the food chain or death and so carbon accumulates in the sediment or is decomposed releasing co2, 50gt is absorbed from atmosphere to the oceans by the organic pump
