1A The Kinetic Particle Model Flashcards
What happens when Particles collide
Kinetic energy can be passed between them
The Greater the kinetic energy of the particles…
the further apart they will be
The amount of energy contained can be reflected through…
the different states of matter
The Kinetic particle model of matter
All matter consists of small particles that are in constant motion. the greater the energy contained by a material, the greater the amount of movement of these particles
What causes an object expand ?
as energy is added to a substance, the particles gain more kinetic energy and move further apart
Thermal Expansion
As energy is added to a substance, the particles gain more kinetic energy and move further apart. this causes the object to expand.
Internal Energy
the total energy contained within a system ( or Substance), and includes both the kinetic and potential energy of its particles
Kinetic energy
the energy of motion. particles with more kinetic energy vibrate, rotate, or move faster
Potential energy
the energy stored sue to the interactions or arrangement of the particles
What happens when a substance’s heat is increased ?
it increases its internal energy by increasing the kinetic energy ( temperature ) or the potential energy of the particles ( change of state)
