9
Q

Why is Perception not always accurate?

A

It is subject to influence; attention, expectation, and content.

Q

What is the Method of Constant Stimuli?

A

A. Provide multiple presentations of a fixed stimuli varying in intensity in random order.
B. observer indicates whether he/she detects the stimulus on each trial.
C. measure number of “yes” responses for each stimulus
D. graph a frequency distribution and determine the absolute threshold

Q

What is the Method of Limits (Adjustment)?

A

a. increase (or decrease) stimulus intensity gradually until response changes
b. adjusted by the experimenter (limits) or observer (adjustment)
c. Absolute Threshold = average change point for ascending and descending series
d. requires multiple runs

Q

What is Difference Threshold (JND)?

A
  • the smallest difference required to discriminate between two stimuli
    a. k.a., just-noticeable difference (JND)

15
Q

What is Weber’s Law & Fechner’s Law?

A

As intensity of the standard increases, so does the JND

The JND is a constant fraction of the comparison stimulus

16
Q

Problems with Methodology?

A
  • Responses to a weak stimulus are highly variable (due to noise) and subject to bias
  • No way to determine if responses are accurate
17
Q

Signal Detection Theory (SDT)? 4 Outcomes

A

Signal, Response: Present or Absent. Hit, Correct Rejection. Miss False Alarm.

18
Q

What is measure d’?

A
  • Standardized difference between hits
    & false alarms
  • Measures performance (sensitivity) independent of criteria
  • A high d’ means more hits, fewer false alarms
