Free Time - boarding schools had a lot of free time to play and games became compulsory on the time table this resulted in high standards of play.
Coaches - They had the money to afford to employ professional coaches e.g. in cricket
Fixtures - They played prestigious matches against teams such as the MCC (cricket)
Money - Due to being wealthy establishments -fees and endowments- they were able to afford land, specialist equipment and facilities
How did Public Schools Promote Ethics through Sports & Games?
Thomas Arnold - Wanted boys to be Christian gentlemen - helping to develop the idea of muscular Christianity linked sport and games to moral / ethical character.
The House System - Inter house matches developed loyalty to House and loyalty to the school.
Ex-Public Schoolboys - Promoted ethics and values in society through sport and games when they became industrialists & army officers etc
Rules - The games were structured and rules were established developing moral integrity/ sportsmanship
How did the ‘Cult’ of Athleticism Influence the Development of Sport ?
This combination of physical endeavour and moral integrity is known as Athleticism.

Officers - Increasing morale and fitness of soldiers and taking British games abroad
Parents - Influencing their children and sending them to their old school
Vicars & Priests- Supporting their parishioners in the formation of youth clubs and parish teams. Also becoming missionaries throughout the British Empire
