Where did the 19th century Settlers in America go to settle?
Large areas of “open” land, west of the land that was already inhabited by Europeans (as advised by the American government)
What did the Settlers believe about this land?
That it was God’s will that they settle in these areas.
They would work hard to farm the land and set up towns.
What were the issues?
Native American’s already lived on the land.
What did the Settlers think of the Native Americans?
They thought that they could ‘civilise’ them, and bring them Christianity
What did the Native Americans do once the Settlers moved west?
Native Americans couldn’t continue their way of life once many Settlers moved west, and started to attack the Settlers.
How did the American government try to stop the attacks by the Native Americans?
They made treaties with the Native Americans
What happened to the Native Americans over time?
- The American government didn’t keep many of it promises to the Native Americans, and they lost the land over time.
- Many Native Americans died from the diseases that the Europeans brought with them.
How were the Settlers moved west?
Railways were built to help them.
Who built the railways?
Chinese labourers (many died due to dangerous conditions)
Where did the cities in the East get their beef?
From the West via the railways.
How did the Native Americans live?
They respected nature, only using what they need (e.g. hunting/ killing animals)
What type of animal did the Native Americans depend on?
Buffalo (they used every part of the animal)
When did Europeans first arrive in America?
1600s
Was there anyone living in America when the Europeans first arrived?
Yes, the Native Americans
What happened to the Native Americans once the Europeans arrived?
Over time the Europeans took over the land, and the Native American’s lost their independence.
