  • 31 July - Treaty from the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START I) signed, reduced strategic warheads by 25-35%
  • Aug - Coup against Gorbachev. By Communist hard-liners. Unsuccessful but Gorbachev’s position never recovered.
  • 26 Dec - USSR Supreme Soviet voted to dissolve itself. Russia’s President Yeltsin seized Gorbachev’s office in the Kremlin
