Newspeak:
The official language of Oceania; replaces “Oldspeak” (normal English).
Though police:
The police of Oceania, who constantly monitor you and try to read your mind. Police who monitor your political allegiance and try to detect people who disagree with the government.
Spies:
A club for children that teaches them the art of espionage; children spy upon their parents and other adults.
Junior Anti-Sex League:
A club for women, such as the dark-haired girl, which promotes abstinence/chastity.
Rations:
The amount of an item distributed by the government of Oceania. Citizens like Winston cannot go shopping like we do; they are given a ration of food, of cigarettes, of chocolate, etc.
Proles/Proletariat:
The lowest of the 3 social classes. They make up 85% of the population.
Big Brother:
The leader of the Party; dictator of Oceania.
Memory hole:
A device for destroying old papers; also a mental technique for deliberately forgetting forbidden information.
Telescreen:
A two-way television; it cannot be turned off and watches you and listens to you.
The Party:
The government of Oceania; a dictatorship (one party rule).
Thoughtcrime:
Disagreeing with the government.
Brotherhood:
A resistance group that seeks to overthrow Big Brother and The Party. Their leader is Emmanuel Goldstein.
Oceania:
One of the three superstates, or countries, that make up the world in 1984. The story takes place in Oceania.
Eastasia/Eurasia:
The other two superstates that make up the world of 1984.
Doublethink:
The ability to believe two contradictory ideas at once.
Utopia:
A perfect society.
Dystopia:
An imperfect society; society with great suffering and injustice.
Ownlife:
A tendency to want to be alone or engage in non-government activities. A desire for solitude; wanting to do your “own thing” separate from communal party activities.
