Brown v Board of Education
Who: Linda Brown, NAACP, Thurgood Marshall
What:Linda Brown wanted to go to a school significantly closer to her home, but it was all white and she wasnt allowed.
When: 1954. May 17, 1954~ Supreme Court overruled “Seperate but equal doctrine”
Emmit Till
Who: Emmitt Till, white woman, white men (murderers), uncle (testified in court)
What: Emmit was from Chicago & customs were different, he whistled @ a white woman, & called her baby. He was later taken from his uncle house, tortured and shot. His body was found @ the bottom of a river, mutilated w/ a heavy weight tied to his feet.
When: summer 1955
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Who: Rosa Parks, Dr. King, NAACP, AA public transportation riders
When: December 1, 1955 - November 1956
What: Rosa Parks was riding the bus on the way home from work when a white man boarded the bus & asked her to move. She refused, and was therefore arrested. Dr. King, pastor @ a local baptist church, stepped up along w/ people in the NAACP. For 381 days AA public transit riders formed carpools and walked to work. Finally the bus company neared bankruptcy and the downtown stores complained about the loss of business
Vietnam War
Summer 1964 president gets word that NV torpedo boats fired on the destroyer Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin. LBJ requested authorization to take all necessary measures to repeal any armed attack against the US. “Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution”
Tactics: 1) Operation Rolling Thunder (bombing campaign vs NV)
2) war of attrition (gradual diminution in number or strength b/c of constant stress)
Special b/c: first war influenced by media
$$ : cost taxpayers$72 billion (1967) -> inflation spiral
The Cuban Missile Crisis
October 1962 “Most dangerous time in history”
US spy planes took pictures of cuban missile sites resulting in a blockade of Cuba with naval vessels. b/c of this USSR mobilized their navy. 13 days of tension resulted. USSR removed their missiles in agreement that US removes their missiles from Turkey.
Greensboro Sit-Ins
February 1, 1960 Greensboro, NC
4 black college students sit in at a “whites only” lunch counter. They were refused service. The student were determined to “sit in “ until they were served. This went on for 3 weeks. They were taunted, had things thrown at them, and beaten, all while remaining non violent. This resulted in the desegregation of that Woolworth’s lunch counter.
