> in 1937 the HUAC investigated many Hollywood personalities because of suspected communist links

What were the effects of McCarthyism?
> for a while the witching was supported by the press and public opinion- no politician could afford to criticise him
> over 2000 were investigated by the HUAC many lost their jobs
- 400 people were sent to jail
- many Hollywood personalities were blacklisted
> it extended to anyone with liberal or left wing views, who were branded as ‘un-american’
> it created an atmosphere of fear and hysteria in America

> due to the expansion of communism in the East
> between 1947-50 the FBI was lead by J Edgar Hoover who was strongly anti communist and investigated 3 million government employees because of communist links
