What was the purpose of the Long telegram?
A
- Show what Truman needs to do to stop Communist expansion
- show that East/West relations are going to fail
- Show that Communists = threat to USA and the free world.

What did Kenan think that the USSR was trying to do (Long telegram)?
A
- Believed that Stalin wanted to impose communist views on rest of the world
- thought that Stalin was demonising the USA to legitimise Stalinist regime
- Thought that the USSR was going to try and pit the west against each other.

A
- Supported Truman’s views (USSR = threat to US ideologies and security)
- Showed that US was moving away from isolationism and getting more involved in international affairs
- It became the basis of US foreign policy (containment)

A
- Europe had been divided in half (one side communist the other non-communist)
- All communist countries answered to Stalin (controlled by USSR)
- USSR wanted to expand its power and ideologies with a soviet sphere of influence
- USA and UK need to keep strong relations to stop communists and keep peace in Europe
