Between 1929-1949:
-the PWA employed over 3 million
-50,000 miles of road
What was the problem with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)
- Established the principle of direct federal government relief for the unemployed
- BUT many states made it difficult to administer
Second New Deal Successes (2)
- WPA employed 8.5 million people over 8 years
- Social Security Act (1935) provided pensions and unemployment insurance
Problems with Social Security (3)
- Amounts given were not generous
- Pensions/ unemployment insurance only became available in 1940, as people needed time to make contributions first
- Workers in agriculture and domestic services were excluded
What was the ‘Roosevelt Recession’
-FDR cut federal expenditure in 1937
-Unemployment rose from 7 million to 10.4 million in 12 months
-Demonstrated the fragility of the New Deal achievements
What was the impact of WW2 wages (2)
- Workers in manufacturing wages increased by 27%
- Farmers income doubled between 1940 and 1945
Depression living standards
- In cities malnutrition was common and diseases such as TB was common
- People would queue at bread lines and soup kitchens
Impact of FDR on living standards (3)
- 4 million homeowners kept their homes through the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation
- Over half of homes had plumbing
- Nearly half of homes had central heating
Limitations on the impact of FDR
-In 1937, FDR admitted he could still see 1/3 of the nation ill housed and ill nourished
