19.3 Competition Flashcards
what is intraspecific competition?
when individuals of the same species compete with one another for resources (e.g. light, food, space, oxygen, water, breeding sites)
how does availability of resources impact the population (intraspecific competition)
greater availability of resources the larger the population. the lower the availability of resources the smaller the population.
what is interspecific competition
when individuals of different species compete for resources (e.g. light, food, space, oxygen, water, breeding sites)
how does interspecific competition influence population size
likely that one of the species has an advantage over the other.
population of this species gradually increases in size.
population of other species will diminish.
if conditions remain the same will result in complete removal of one species (competitive exclusion principle)
what does the competitive exclusion principle state
where two species are competing for limited resources, the one that uses resources most effectively will eliminate the other.
no two species can occupy the same niche indefinitely when resources are limiting
how to show how a factor influences the size of a population
link birth rate and death rate of individuals in a population.
