Q

How were coal and steal workers affected by the boom?

A

Coal workers’ wages were a third of the national average.
There had been strikes from coal and steel workers over poor wages and bad conditions. Some in West Virginia ended with state troopers being sent to disperse the strikers.
In North Carolina, there was a strike because male workers were paid $18 and women $9 for a 70 hour week when $48 was seen as the minimum required for the basic standard of living.
