A

The rejection of the League of Nations in 1919. The group in the senate nicknamed the ‘irreconcilables’ included William Borah who made a speech to the senate convincing them not to join.

Who was the Democrat candidate and what was their campaign like?

A

Wilson’s health had been affected by his endless touring and suffered a stroke in 1919 so didn’t run again.
James Cox was selected as the democratic candidate and his vice president was FDR. They struggled during the campaign as democrat support had been dwindling since the 1916 election and especially in the 1918 midterms, also Harding barely saw them as a threat instead choosing to attack Wilson.

Who was the Republican candidate and what was their campaign focused on?

A

Warren Harding was the nominee with Calvin Coolidge as his vice president - their main slogan was ‘a return to normalcy’ (a word mess up of normality that caught on) but they also advocated for Law and Order and America First.

What were the results of the 1920 election?

A

Harding won 60% of the popular vote THE MOST EVER. This was the beginning of more popular presidents and move away from forgettable presidents of the Gilded Age. The Democrats did not win a single seat outside the solid south.
