What four things should you inspect valve springs and valve spring seats for
Nicks, cracks, signs of corrosion and wear
What is the free length of the valve spring
Free length is the freestanding or uncompressed length of the valve spring
Valve springs should be checked for out of square what is the maximum allowable variation and why is this important
Generally one 16th of an inch because out of square springs will put a side load on the valve stem as it opens and closes
When using a valve spring tester what two things are you checking
Specifications for open and closed valve positions at a certain height and load
What does low valve spring tension cause
Poor valve sealing, poor valve cooling and valve float or flutter at high engine speeds
When inspecting rocker arms be sure to inspect valve stem tip contact points for wear and pitting, inspect rocker arm bushings or or for wear or damage and
Inspect rocker arms for cracks inspect the adjusting screw, locknut and rocker arm threads for wear or damage as this will make it impossible or difficult for valve adjustment
Crosshead rockers located by a guide pin require two additional checks what are they
Measure the crosshead guide pin bore and inside diameter, measure guide pin outside diameter
Why is it important to replace excessively worn crosshead guide pins
They make crosshead adjustment difficult and contribute to valvetrain noise
What are some signs of wear on pushrods
Signs of overheating, going, signs of fatigue, Preston welds checked for those inserts and cracks,
