190104e battery fundamentals and services Flashcards
1
Q
what are the purposes of a battery?
pg.2
A
- start the vehicle
- power the electric circuits when the alternator is not running
- take electric shock loads
pg. 2
2
Q
what are the safety precautions/rules when working with batteries? (10 of them)
pg.3-5
A
- wear eye and breathing protection
- wear anything the protects you from electrolytes
- know that a solution of baking soda and water neutralizes electrolytes
- always use the appropriate tool to carry batteries
- avoid sparks near the battery
- do NOT service a battery that you suspect or that was frozen
- electrolytes need to be above the plates before any boosting, charging or testing is performed
- turn electronics off first before removing battery cables
- when charging a battery make all the connections to the battery first before connecting the charger to the wall
- don’t lay tools (conductors) on top of the battery
pg. 3-5
3
Q
what are the 3 types of batteries that I will maintain, service and test? describe some details about each type.
pg.6-7
A
- maintenance type batteries (conventional batteries)
- design to allow the electrolytes to be checked and adjusted through maintenace - low maintenance type batteries
- are design to reduce the amount of maintenance required through its life span
- usually has a see-through case that allows you to visually monitor electrolyte levels, also has a cap for access of each cell - maintenance-free batteries
- design with no access to the battery cells
- the battery is glued and sealed, you can only monitor the battery electrolytes level through a transparent case or a sight-glass that indicates the state of charge and liquid levels
pg. 6-7
4
Q
facts about deep cycle batteries
pg.8
A
- can withstand frequent discharge and recharge cyclings
- can deliver small amounts of amperage over a long time
- manufactured as maintenance free type batteries
- thick, high density positive plates
pg. 8
5
Q
what causes permanent battery damage?
pg.7
A
- repeated discharge below 75% of full charge for long periods
pg. 7
