What are the three levels of the role of the unconcious and what did fued compare it to?
He compared it to an ice burg.
- conscious level which is the tip and can be seen (our general thoughts we can see).
- precocious level which is slightly covered but can be seen ( can be thought about and brought to conscious mind).
- unconscious level which is the part of the iceberg that is completely hidden under water (trauma that we are not aware of an can effect future behaviour).
What are defended mechanisms?
psychological strategies used to unconsciously protect someone from anxiety.
Over use of what can cause psychosis? What is psychosis?
Defence mechanisms, when people lose some contact with reality.
Name all three defence mechanisms?
Denial, displacement, repression
What is denial?
Rejection that an event is happening, not a conscious process (completely unaware) your mind puts you into denial to cope and eventually get used to idea of event being true.
What is displacement?
Redirections of feelings to a more socially acceptable target.
What is repression?
Mind forcing memories to unconscious mind (no-longer aware it has taken place). This only causes temporary protection.
Name all three tripartite model or structure of the mind?
ID EGO SUPEREGO
When do you get ID and what is it?
Born with it and it is the pleasure principle (selfish drive).
When do you get the EGO and what is it?
1-3 years old, reality principle (learn to fight urges).
When do you get the super ego and what is it?
3-6 years old, morality principle (understanding right and wrong).
What can effect the development of the super ego?
Parental and social values.
Why should the tripartite model of the mind be balanced?
Unbalanced one can cause mental health problems.
