What was the Dust Bowl?
A series of extreme droughts and dust storms in the late 1930s. Drove many agriculture migrants from Oklahoma and Texas to California in search of work.
What happened at Pearl Harbor?
Site of a surprise attack on the port of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii by the Japanese Navy. After, the United States had no choice but to enter the war.
World War II (WWII)
Fought from 1939-1945 between the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and Allied powers (France, Great Britain, the United Stares and the Soviet Union).
What was the Butler Act?
A Tennessee state law that made it a crime to teach evolution in public school.
World War I (WWI)
Fought from 1914-1919 between the Central Powers (mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) and the Allied Powers (mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States).
What was the Seneca Falls Convention?
Held in New York in 1848, this convention is seen at the first organized up in the women’s suffrage movement.
Who was Franklin D Roosevelt?
32nd US president serving from 1933-1945. Known for his New Deal to try and fix the Great Depression and leading the US during world war two. Only president to serve more than two terms.
What was the New Deal?
A series of policies, public work projects, and financial reforms passed by Franklin D Roosevelt between 1933 and 1936 in an attempt to stimulate the economy.
Social Security, unemployment benefits, FDIC
What was the Scopes Monkey Trial?
A landmark trial in 1925 that sought to overturn the Butler act. While it did not, it is seen as an important trial that paved the way for teaching evolution in public schools.
What was Smoot-Harley Tariff Act?
Tariffs passed in 1930 on over 20,000 imported goods with the intention of protecting American jobs, but resulted in decreased international trade.
What is the Sherman Anti-Trust Act?
Regulated business practices.
What is the 16th Amendment?
Allows the government to collect taxes on income.
What was the Great Depression?
An unprecedented period of worldwide economic downturn. Began in October 1929 with the United States stock market crash. World War II was integral in pulling many countries out of the depression by increasing factory production.
What was the Cold War?
The period after World War II in which the United States and the Soviet union never truly engaged in warfare, but was marketed by political disagreements between the capitalist and communist countries.
What was Women’s Suffrage?
The right of women to vote and political elections.
