19. Streptococcus Flashcards
What type of gram bacteria are streptococci?
- Gram positive cocci
- in chains
How are streptococci classified by haemolysis?
- alpha haemolysis
- beta haemolysis
- gamma haemolysis
What is alpha haemolysis and how does it appear on agar?
- partial haemolysis
- produced dark green colour on blood agar
Define viridans and which type of haemolysis do these streptococci show?
Viridans means green
- viridans streptococci are alpha haemolytic
What is beta haemolysis and how does it appear on agar?
- complete haemolysis
- produces translucent/yellow area on blood agar
What is gamma haemolysis?
- no haemolysis
- non-haemolytic streptococci
What is Lancefield classification?
Serological classification of beta-haemolytic streptococci, based on cell wall antigens
What is the major group A strep?
Strep pyogenes (pyogenic )
What are the classifications of S. pneumoniae?
- NA
- α
- viridans (but can be pyogenic)
What is S. pneumoniae associated with?
- Pneumonia
Can produce a polysaccharide capsule and get into the blood stream:
- meningitis, endocarditis, peritonitis
