19. Intro Drilling & Cementing Flashcards
Types of Rigs
Drillship, Semi-submersible, Jackup, submersible, land
Derrick
Main structure through which all the drilling operations performed; can suspend millions of pounds in weight; used to apply weight to the drill string
Mud System
Well Control, control leak-off; cooling & lubrication; transport drilling debris; provide drilling power (motor)
BOP RAM functions
Blind, Shear, Slip, Pipe RAM
Casing
Large pipe run into the wellbore to protect the integrity of the hole and isolate various parts of the formation from each other and the surface; concentric with smalles diameter reaching the greatest depth and largest diameter closer to surface
Four most common casings from surface to downhole
Conductor, surface, intermediate, production casing
Objectives of Well Cementing
Zonal Isolation; Support for subsequent casing strings; protection for the casing; protection of the borehole
Primary Cementing Steps
Mud circulation by rig pump; pressure test; pump wash and spacer; dropping bottom plug; mixing slurry; pump lead slury; pump tail slury; dropping top plug; displacement; check returns
Which has a lower density lead or tail slurry?
Lead because it will be covering the upper part of the annulus.
Plug Cementing
Sidetraccking; abandonment; depleated zone plug; lost circulation plug; Open-hole test anchor
Remedial/Squeeze Cementing
repair improper zonal isolation; raise the top of the cement; plug perforations; repair corroded casing
Difference in top and bottom plug
Load bottom plug into cement head first; bottom plug is not solid because it has to rupture
