18.2 Addition polymerisation Flashcards
How do you draw ethene before polymerization and after?
Before you draw the Carbon atoms in a C=C double bond and the hydrogen’s in a bracket with the letter ‘n’ BEFORE it to indicate the number of ethene molecules joined together
After you break the C=C bond and put the ethene WITH C-C bonds in brackets and extend the bonds out of the brackets in Both sides to indicate the place where the molecule can be linked. Then you put ‘n’ AFTER the bracket, to the bottom right.
How is addition polymerization described ?
The double C=C bonds in the molecules break and the molecules ADD onto each other
For an addition polymerization to take place what must the monomers the are made from have?
Double, C=C bonds
Why can’t we write an exact formula for polythene?
Because chains are not the same lengths although they are all similar in long chains of atoms with hydrogen’s attached.
When Chloroethene is polymerized, what is the product?
Polychloroethene
Which is PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
What is the product of the polymerization of tetrafluoroethenr?
Polytetrafluoroethene
Which is Teflon
What is the product of phenylenthene (styrene) when polymerization takes place?
Polyphenylethene
Which is also Polystyrene
How do you identify the monomer from a polymer?
See repeating parts and draw brackets around
Then put a double bond on the Carbon.
