Alkanes contain only carbon and hydrogen so the are _________.
Bonds between their Carbon atoms are ________.
- Hydrocarbon
2. Single bonds
Alkenes are __________.
All contain Carbon Carbon __________.
The Carbon = Carbon bond is their ____________.
- Hydrocarbons
- Double bonds
- Functional group
Alcohols are NOT __________.
They are like alkanes but with ________ group.
__________ is their functional group.
- Hydrocarbons
- OH
- OH
Carboxylic acid are NOT _________.
All carboxylate acid contain ________ group.
_________ is their functional group.
- Hydrocarbons
- COOH
- COOH
What is a Functional group?
Is a part of a molecule that largerly dictates how the molecule acts/will act.
Ex. All alkenes have the functional group C=C so they act the same.
What is a homologous series?
Each family has its own homologous series which every compound in it fits. They have similar properties that change as the chains of carbon get longer. Ex. As the chain gets longer in Alkanes - melting and boiling points raise - viscosity increases -flammability decreases
