1.8 inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
where are inorganic ions found in the body
A
in solution in cytoplasm and body fluid, some in high concentrations and others in low concentrations
2
Q
what are the inorganic ions
A
- hydrogen ions
- iron ions
- sodium ions
- phosphate ions
3
Q
describe the role of hydrogen ions
A
- maintains pH levels in the body as a high concentration = acidic/low pH
- affects enzymes rate of reaction as can cause enzymes to denature
4
Q
describe the role of iron ions
A
- component of haemoglobin
- allows oxygen to bind/associate for transport as oxyhaemoglobin
5
Q
describe the role of sodium ions
A
- involved in co transport of glucose/amino acids into cells
- involved in action potentials in neurons
- affects water potential of cells/osmosis
6
Q
describe the role of phosphate ions
A
- component of nucleotides, allowing phosphodiester bonds to form in DNA/RNA
- component of ATP, allowing energy release
- phosphorylates other compounds making them more reactive
- hydrophilic part of phospholipids allows a bilayer to form
