1.8 - FERROUS AND NON FERROUS METALS Flashcards
Define ferrous metal
A metal that contains iron so they corrode quickly ( if not treated with a suitable surface finish ).
Define mild steel
Also known as low carbon steel because it has the lowest carbon content of the different steel types
Mild steel contains..
Around 99% iron and a maximum of 0.25% carbon
Other elememts like maganese, sulphur, silicon make up the remaining fraction
Mild steel is
Relatively affordable compared to other types of steel, it is easy to machine and weld
Common uses of mild steel
Used in structural steel buildings signs, car in vehicle bodies and panels and wire
stainless steel contains..
iron and between 15 and 30% of other metals (chromium and nickel)
Properties of stainless steel
High resistance to corrosion compared to other types of steel, tough and ductile with high strength and temperature resistance.
common stainless steel uses
Medical instruments, kitchen utensils and appliances , vehicle exhaust systems , hardware and structural/architectural items.
Cast iron is…
A mixture of iron and 2% or more of carbon.
Cast iron is heavy and…
Has good compressive strength but quite brittle and can crack / shatter under impact
Cast iron has a..
Low melting point. and is more resistant to wear and corrosion than mild steel
Is mild steel ferrous or non ferrous?
Ferrous
Is stainless steel ferrous or non ferrous?
Ferrous
Is cast iron Ferrous or non ferrous?
Ferrous
What makes a metal ferrous?
Has iron in it.
Properties of non ferrous metals
Much more corrosion resistant
Generally more expensive
Aluminium has a…
High strength to wait to ratio as its light weight
Aluminium properties:
Easy to cut and shape, high strength to weight ratio as its lightweight, Attractive so doesnt need a finish
Common aluminium uses..
Drinks cans ,foils ,window frames ,air plane parts
Copper is..
An excellent electrical and thermal conductor
Doesnt corrode or tarnish easily.
Is copper strong?
Ductile, so easily shaped
How is copper joined?
Easilyz by soldering or brazing
Is copper attractive?
Can be polished to an attractive golden colour
Common copper uses:
water pipes, electrical cables, jewellery, statues and outdoor decorative features
