18-19th century Medicine Flashcards
Care, treatments and prevention
More hospital care in filthy hospitals with untrained nurses until Florence nightingale made changes after her experiences in the Crimean war
Different wards for different types of ailment and well ventilated hospitals
Increased deaths in surgery due to septic conditions. No understanding of sterile surgery
Lister starts using carbolic acid to sterilise surgery equipment and wards. This lead to a significant fall in deaths
Aseptic surgery: gowns, masks, gloves, scrubbed operating theatres, big improvements on listers carbolic acid plan which was harsh on skin
Understanding of disease
In 1861 Louis Pasteur of France proved that microbes were the cause not the result of decay and disease. No more 4 humours
Surgeon Joseph Lister used his knowledge to greatly reduce the rate of post-surgical infection by using carbolic bandages
Pasteur
Germs cause disease. Not the other way round
Things go mouldy due to bacteria
GERM THEORY
He created vaccines in lab after Jenner’s work.
Mass production
Koch
Extracted bacteria and put it in mice to prove germ theory right.
Koch uses staining to prove differences in bacteria.
Jenner
1848
Cowpox vaccination
Chadwick
1842 Cholera epidemic
Chadwick tells government that living conditions need to improve
Workers unwell=Low production

Woman far away also died. She had been getting water from broad street.
Proved water is bad. Theory only accepted when Koch theory came out
Simpson
Chloroform - Good anesthetiser
Accidentally smashed bottle. Falls asleep. Once killed a girl during operation.
Queen Victoria’s uses it to deliver her child
