1.8 Flashcards
Ecosystem Productivity
The amount of energy available in an ecosystem determines how much life the ecosystem can support. Energy enters the ecosystem as sunlight, through photosynthesis. (Only 1-2% o f the light falling on a tree is captured)
Producers (Autotrophs)
Are able to use the sun’s energy to produce usable energy through the process called photosynthesis
Photosynthesis Equation
6 Co2 ( Carbon dioxide) + 6 H2O (water) + sunlight –> C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6 O2 (oxygen)
Net Primary Productivity (NPP)
Everything left over for other organisms to eat
Gross Primary Productivity
The total amount of solar energy that the producers in an ecosystem capture via photosynthesis over a given amount of time. (Units : kcal / m^2 / yr )
Solar radiation
quality/quantity of light
Human Impact
Use, waste, or destroy 20-30% of Earth’s NPP. Make up <1% of the biomass of Earth’s consumers
