17.9.24 Flashcards
Calderas
A large volcanic crater, from which volcanic material is emitted
Fissure eruptions
Where lava erupts from several points or vents simultaneously (evident in Hawaii)
Description of mantle convection
Movement of the mantle as it transfers heat from the core to the lithosphere
Description of slab pull
Where subduction is occurring the force slab pull is created as the plate begins to sink into the mantle
Description of subduction process in the Benioff zone
Slab pull being thrust downwards in a subduction zone. Multiple earthquakes produced at different depths
Description of ridge push
As the lithosphere is formed at divergent plate margins is hotter and less dense than the surrounding area. Slide sideways away from high areas.
Movement is enhanced by slab pull
Description of sea floor spreading
Huge mid ocean ridges from when hot magma is forced up from the asthenosphere and hardens forming a new oceanic crust. This new crust pushes the tectonic plates apart in sea floor spreading
Benioff zone
Is an area of seismicity corresponding with the slab being thrust downwards
