What does hegemonic empire refer to?
Refers to one direct dominating control of lands, e.g cult economic, military intervention without formal conquest. There is no formal rule but there is a sense of attempted control.
There is a strong disproportionate influence without complete political control
Who developed international law?
EU to diffuse disputes over territories.
What did the EU want?
The EU wanted to conquer/ dominate natives and satisfy their material needs and subjects of religious conversion.
There was little consideration of others as in columbus’ diary he states he ‘discovered’ America. He saw them simply as a means of economic and religious conversion etc.
What happened in 1493?
Alexander VI issues ‘papal bull’ which confirms the Spanish title to lands if they convert inhabitants to Christianity. This was stated in the Inter caetera. They had to convert the heathens as the Pope was the only source of international law and authority. The Pope provided guidance.

Treaty of Tordesillas.
A line of demarcation was introduced to settle territorial disputes between Spain and Portugual. After this, the land ‘belong’ to them, that how they saw the land.

A civilising force, it was a good thing.

Why were the convicts sent to Botany Bay?
Convicts were originally transported to the US 17thc-18thc.
By 1776 US fed up with the British doing so and interrupted this flow of convicts,. This led to prisons becoming crowded so they sent them to Australia
The first fleet to bounty bay was in 1788.
What was it like in Botany Bay?
There was regulated trade, largely British settlers and it was also governed from London.
By the late 18thc, there was free trade, a wide range of peoples including British settlers and indigenous peoples, there was also two forms of government.
