17.3 Flashcards
Reproductive Isolation
When a population becomes reproductively isolated, they can become different species. Reproductive Isolation can develop in ways such as behavioral iso, geographic iso, and temporal iso.
Behavioral Isolation
When two organisms start to differ because of their behavior.
ex: birds might become behaviorally isolated due to their courtship rituals.
Geographic Isolation
When two populations are separated by geographic barriers
ex: Squirrels around the grand canyon began to differ due to their location.
Temporal Isolation
Happens when two or more species reproduce at different times.
ex: species of flower that last only one day must be pollinated on that day to produce seeds. Because the species bloom on different days, they cannot pollinate each other.
Molecular Clock
Uses mutation rates in DNA to estimate the time that two species have been evolving independently.
