1.7 - Genomic Sequencing Flashcards
What is genomics
Genomics is the study of an organisms genome (entire genetic material)
2 reasons why an organisms DNA is studied
To determine the sequence of bases that code for each gene
To determine the function of that gene
What does bioinformatics allow
Bioinformatics allows scientists to map, analyse, and compare DNA sequences quickly and on a large scale using a computer
The sequence data is used to investigate evolutionary pathways, inheritance and personalised medicine
What is phylogenetic
Phylogenetic trees can be used to represent the relatedness of organisms and their evolutionary relationships
What are the 3 domains of life
Bacteria (Prokaryotes)
Eukaryotes
Archaea
Key events in the evolution in life
Vertebrates ^ Land plants ^ Animals ^ Multicellular organisms ^ Eukaryotes ^ Photosynthetic organisms ^ Prokaryotes
What is pharmacogenetics
Pharmacogenetics is the study of an individuals genome to create personalised medicine
