1.7 Energy, Work & Power Flashcards
What are the four energy transfer pathways?
- Mechanical working (pulling/pushing, stretching/squashing)
- Electrical working
- Heating by particles (conduction)
- Heating by radiation
Formula to find kinetic energy
EK = Kinetic energy
m = mass
v = speed
Formula to find gravitational potential energy
ΔEp = Change in gravitational potential energy
m = mass
g = gravitational field strength
Δh = change in height
Formula for work done
Work done = force x distance = change in energy
Formula for power
Power = work done over time (OR energy over time)
What is efficiency?
A measure of the amount of wasted energy in an energy transfer
Formula for efficiency
(Can also be written in terms of power instead of energy)
List renewable sources of energy
Solar, hydropower, tidal, wind, geothermal, wave, biomass
List non-renewable sources of energy
Nuclear, fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas, etc)
