What is the MC type of child abuse?
Neglect - failure to provide for the needs of the child
Also the hardest to document / prove
Physical, emotional, medical
What fractures have high specificity for abuse?
Rib (posterior), metaphyseal, scapular, vertebral, skull (non-linear), sternum
Normal accidental bruising areas for toddlers
Mouth, nose, forehead (fell on face)
Shins (bumping into stuff)
Lower back (falling back on butt)
Abuse bruising patterns for toddlers:
Eyes, chin, ears, neck
Arms (think pinching/grabbing)
Abdomen
Thighs
Red bruise - age?
0-2 days
Blue/purple bruise - age?
2-5 days
Green bruise - age?
5-7 days
Yellow bruise - age?
7-10 days
Brown bruise - age?
10-14 days
Bruise progress - what happens?
Hemoglobin -> biliverdin -> bilirubin
Neglect (MCC of abuse) will result in what type of growth deficiency?
Type 1 - head and length normal, weight low
