1.7 Cardiovascular drift Flashcards

1
Q

What is cardiovascular drift?

A

heart rate increases to compensate a decreasing stroke volume to maintain cardiac output
during steady state exercise in warm environment

Q

What happens to stroke volume?

A

during prolonged steady state exercise
stroke volume will peak and start to decrease

Q

Why does stroke volume change?

A

as body temp increases, causing them to sweat to release heat energy via evaporation
simultaneously, stroke volume decrease as fluid lost in blood as lost through sweat

Q

What happens when stroke volume changes?

A

reduced plasma volume
reduced venous return
causes heart rate to increase to maintain cardiac output
