- SCIENTIFIC NAME

- BIOACTIVE COMPOUND
- COMPOUND CLASS
- USES
- SCIENTIFIC NAME: cannabis sativa
- PART USED: floral buds
- MODE OF ADMINISTRATION: smoke inhalation, oral
- BIOACTIVE COMPOUND: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
- COMPOUND CLASS: cannabinoid
- USES: pain, anxiety, nausea, glaucoma
what are the 2 compounds found in cannabis?
- psychoactive? receptors? medical benefit? side effects? –> compare and contrast
- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vs cannabidiol (CBD)
- THC = main psychoactive compound –> binds to CB1 receptors –> producing sense of euphoria
- CBD: nonpsychoactive compound –>binds very weakly to CB1 receptors
- CBD and THC have many of same medical benefits
- CBD has fewer side effects VS THC can cause increased HR, dry mouth, red eyes, memory loss, slower reaction times
what are the 3 core components of the endocannabinoid system?
- endocannbinoids
- receptors
- enzymes
describe the endocannabinoid system: KNOW THIS!
- what are the 2 endocannabinoids identified so far? (ON EXAM)
- what are the 2 receptors? found where?
*THC vs CBD effects ish?
- what are the 2 enzymes? what doe they do?
complex lipip signaling network in which different proteins play distinct roles in control of sleep, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction and fertility
ENCANNABINOIDS
1. anandamide
2. 2-arachidonoylglycerol
RECEPTORS:
1. CB1 receptors: found in CNS
2. CB2 receptors: found in PNS, especially immune cells
*THC can bind both and cause physiological effects VS CBD seems to prevent breakdown of endocannabinoids
ENZYMES:
1. fatty acid amide hydrolase breakds down anandamide
2. monoacylglycerol acid lipase breakds down 2-arachidonoylglycerol
*the 2 enzymes break down endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function
can endocannabinoids bind to both receptors? result depends on what? (2)
both endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol) can bind to both receptors (CB1 and CB2). - effects that result depend on where receptor is located and which endocannabinoid it binds to!
