17. Alcohols And Organic Acids Flashcards
What are alcohols?
Organic compounds that have hydroxyl groups (-OH) in place of a hydrogen
What are the properties of ethanol?
Medical uses were for pain relief before anaesthetics
Ethanol is used as an antiseptic product in hand sanitizers
What is glycerol?
A sweet and nontoxic alcohol which is soluble in water and is often used as a sweetener in food and as a solvent for medicines and cosmetics.
What is isopropanol?
A type of propanol used as an antiseptic and in the swabs used to sterilise skin before injections.
Rubbing alcohol.
Used to prevent ear infections by helping to dry up water in the ear after swimming
What are the properties of alcohols?
Neutral ph Low boiling points Liquids at room temperature Evaporate easily Good solvents of organic acids Good fuels Soluble in water
What are carboxylic acids/ organic acids?
Compounds which have a functional group called carboxyl (-COOH) attached to one of the carbons instead of a hydrogen
What are the properties of organic acids?
- Weak ph of 3-6
- soluble in water
- when in water, the hydrogen atom in the -COOH group causes them to behave as acids as it will break away from the molecule and form hydrogen ions
- organic acids are not as strong as inorganic acids that produce a higher concentration of hydrogen ions when in water, compared to organic acids.
What is a homologous series?
Series of compounds with the same general formula and functional group, varying by the length of a carbon chain.
