16. Hydrocarbons And Organic Compounds Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons?
Organic compounds with contain only hydrogen and carbon.
What are the three classes of hydrocarbons?
Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes
What are the properties of Alkanes?
Hydrocarbons which have only single bonds between the carbon atoms. The formula is CnH2n+2
What are the properties of alkenes?
Hydrocarbons with at least one carbon to carbon double bond.
Formula is CnH2n
What are alkynes?
Hydrocarbons with at least one triple bond (carbon to carbon).
Formula is CnH2n-2
Are Alkanes saturated or unsaturated molecules?
Alkanes are saturated molecules because all the bonds between the carbons are single ones and the molecules hold as many hydrogen so as possible.
Are alkenes and alkynes saturated or unsaturated molecules?
They are unsaturated as they contain less than the maximum number of hydrogen possible due to double or triple bonds.
What are physical properties of Alkanes?
Colourless
Oily odour
Alkanes can be gases solids or liquids
The more carbon the higher the melting/boiling point because the molecules are heavier
Insoluble in water
Alcohols are good solvents
Neutral ph
