16.3 Death and resurrection Flashcards
Last supper- significance
-
-
Last supper- importance to Christians today
- Jesus’ suffering gives comfort and hope
- Turning point in Christian history
- Roman Catholics believe the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ (transubstantiation)
- Celebrated and re-enacted every week at mass
- Brought a new covenant between God and the human race
Gethsemane- humanity vs divinity
- Shows Jesus’ humanity in his fearfulness- “distressed”, “deeply grieved, even to death”, “threw himself on the ground”, “remove this cup from me”
- Shows Jesus’ divinity- “Abba, father”, “not what I will, but what you will”, “hour might pass from him”
Gethsemane- importance to Christians today
- Worrying for Christians that God’s son was afraid of facing death
- Jesus asked God to take this cup away- didn’t he trust God?
- He had to question God, showing he didn’t know everything
- “Not what I will…” Jesus was separate from God- goes against the Trinity
Judas’ betrayal- why he did it
- Judas wanted a warrior Messiah, but Jesus was too peaceful
- Night time arrest because they were fearful of Jesus’ authority
- Jesus said he wasn’t a “bandit”, so there should be no violence
- It was part of God’s plan
Judas’ betrayal- why he should be forgiven
- Mark refers to Judas as a traitor from the start
- Jesus embraced Judas as a friend- love your enemies
- Judas had to act this way to fulfil the prophecies
- Judas took his own life after, showing he was truly sorry
Religious trial- issues with it
- The trial is seen as unfair- people testified falsely
- It happened at night
- Jesus associated himself with God but never used God’s name
- He should have been tried in public
Trial before Pontius Pilate- importance to Christians today
- Jesus was bounded to convey he was dangerous
- Mark portrays the priests and Jewish crowd as responsible
- Christians lay some of the blame on Pilate as he had the power to go against the crowd
- Some Christians see this as a necessary part of God’s plan
Crucifixion- significance
-Lots of Old Testament prophecies were fulfilled
-Even at his death, he was in the midst of outcasts and sinners
-The curtain represented God on one side, and worshippers on the other, so the barrier was gone between us and God
-
Crucifixion- importance to Christians today
- Jesus gave up his life as a ransom for many, which had to be paid to free us from sin and bring us back to God
- God showed his love was so huge, he would sacrifice his only son
- Jesus’ death bridged the gap original sin had created
- Jesus died so that we could go to heaven
Burial- significance
-Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin, but followed Jesus
-Joseph broke Sabbath rules to bury Jesus
-Mark’s account could be historically accurate as it doesn’t exactly fulfill Old Testament prophecies
-
Resurrection- proof
-Mary Magdalene was at both the burial and resurrection, so we know they went to the right tomb
-The stone was too large for just one man to move by himself
-Many people believe the man dressed in white was an angel
