16.2 Precipitation of ionic compounds Flashcards
What is the abbreviation of a ion product and what symbol can be used?
IP and symbol Q
What is the equation of IP?
I.P = [Ca2+]t [F-]^2 t at time t
Not necessary at equilibrium
most of the time t=0 (initial)
What does IP help us with?
decide whether a precipitate of an ionic cpd will form when solutions that contain the constituent ions are mixed
How do we determine the precipitate with IP?
I.P > Ksp the solution is supersaturated and precipitation occur.
I.P = Ksp the solution is saturated and equilibrium exist already
I.P < Ksp the solution is unsaturated and precipitation will not occur.
will a precipitate form when 0.150L of 0.10M Pb(NO3)2 and 0.100L of 0.20M NaCl are mixed? (Ksp (PbCl2) = 1.2*10-5 )
Yes it will occur. IP= 3.8*10^-4
