16 test Flashcards
Know what a 4 way valve is used for and what it is?
AKA a hydrant valve. allows you to provide water to the fire at hydrant pressure, while waiting for a second pumper to hook up and increase flow and pressure.
Know the layout of a dutchman?
Short fold in a supply hose that keeps the coupling from flipping around
What is a soft sleeve hose used for?
To connect a pumper to a pressurized water source.
Know what a combination hose is?
A type of hose lay that splits the hose bed and connects couplings. Useful for making forward lays
Know what psi a pump supplies a sprinkler system?
150 psi
Know what a reverse lay is.
A reverse lay is when the hose is brought from the engine to the hydrant
The end of the hose being closest to the cab is known as the what?
Front
Know what a defensive tactic is.
Attack from the outside of the structure
Where should you be standing when charging a supply line at a hydrant?
The firefighter should avoid standing between the hose line and the hydrant
Where is the trash line most commonly found on a pumper?
Special compartment in the front bumper
Which attack line uses hoses of different diameters?
Wyed attack line
Know what a split hose lay is.
Performed by two engine companies when hose must be laid in two different directions to establish a water supply
Know all of the hose loads(accordion, horseshoe, etc..)
Flat hose load- Hose loading method in which the hose is laid flat and stacked on top of the previous section. It can also be used with any size of hose
Horseshoe hose load- Accomplished by placing the hose on its edge and positioning it around the perimeter of the hose bed in a U-shape.
Accordion - Has the hose up on its edge and laid side to side in the hose bed
Know about a flat hose load?
Hose loading method in which the hose is laid flat and stacked on top of the previous section. It can also be used with any size of hose
Know the features of a triple hose load :
- Suited for fires in one- or two-story single family dwellings.
- Hose is folded back onto itself to reduce the overall length to one-third before loading.
3 .Used by companies with minimal personnel. - One person can clear the hose bed and deploy.
- It can be deployed and charged before entering the building.
- More difficult to load; requires practice and space.
Know the advantages/disadvantages of a forward and reverse lay
Advantage of forward lay is places the attack engine and its equipment close to the fire
Know the advantages of a accordion hose load
Can be used to carry length of hose on shoulder for high rise fires
Know advantages of horseshoe hose load
It reduces the number of sharp bends in the hose
Know the basic 3 supply hose loads
Accordion, horseshoe, flat
Know what a blitz is
This fire suppression method knocks the main body of the fire down with a large stream
What is the purpose of creating a bight on an attack line for an interior attack?
Create less friction points on an outward swinging door
Know why a combination supply line load is used.
It is capable of laying both single and dual supply lines
What is a portable monitor an example of?
Master Stream Device
Know what should be used when a vehicle has compressed gas
Handline or Unmanned Master Stream Cooled and protected just like any gas cylinder
Know what master stream device is mounted at the tip of an aerial ladder.
Ladder pipe
How should attic fires generally be treated?
Ventilation-limited
Know what class energized electrical fires are.
Class C
Know what an offensive operation is.
Attacking the source of the fire at the interior of the building
Know what an indirect attack is.
Spraying water above the fire to cool the atmosphere
Know at what degree you should approach a vehicle fire.
45 degrees
Know what should be used to extinguish a chimney fire
Dry Chemical
Know when to do an offensive attack
Structure is salvageable, fire is not totally uncontrolled. Used in situations where the fire is not too large to be extinguished by applying water using handlines
For a direct attack, know when to stop applying water
After all visible flame is extinguished
Know in a residential construction, fresh air enters the attic space through which vent
Intake Vents
Know when large handline and master streams are more often used.
Defensive
Peeling or bubbling paint is an indicator of what?
A fire is on the other side of the wall
Know for which fire attack you’d be preventing the spread of fire as your primary objective.
Defensive
Know what flow path is
A flow path is an area within a structure where heat, smoke, and air flow from areas of higher pressure to lower pressure
Know what SLICERS stands for
Size-up, Locate the fire, Isolate the flow path, Cool from a safe distance, Extinguish, Rescue and Salvage at any time in the process
Know what a transitional attack is
An attack in which the spraying of water begins on the outside, allowing access to attack the inside
Know what happens when a hose stream that consist of droplets with a large surface area does ?
Heat absorption is enhanced
Know what to use for extinguishment of combustible fires
Water
Know what is the correct method to stop gas delivered via underground utility network into the structure
Turn off the valve at the meter
Know when you should find the safe location in a structure
A temporary location that provides refuge while awaiting rescue or finding a method of self rescue from a hazardous situation.
Know what to do on the RIT team when you reach a downed firefighter in a hazardous environment
Asses the Fire Fighters condition
Know when a risk benefit analysis should be applied
Constantly throughout the operation
During a two person rescue of a downed firefighter know where to grab the victim
SCBA shoulder straps
Know what it means when you drop off your PAR roster at the command post
The company is inside the hazard area
How are tasks assigned on the fireground
They are assigned by the IC
Know how many ways to use a low pressure hose on a RIC pack
Three
Know how a hose line can assist you when you become disoriented
Always keep foot or hand on handline to find your way out
Know who goes to rehab if one person needs to go to rehab
Everyone in the group goes
Regarding firefighter survival what is a safe location
A less dangerous area within a hazardous zone that allows you to wait for rescue
When should a downed firefighters facepiece be replaced with the emergency face piece from the RIC bag?
When the firefighter’s face piece is compromised
Know what the board is called where you place your PAR tags
Special display board
Why is it important to work as a team in the fire service?
Because of the intense physical labor involved in firefighting operations
What is the name of the system for tracking everyone from the time they arrive to the time they are released
Personnel Accountability System
Under working conditions, an SCBA rated for 45 minutes is expected to last for how long?
20-25 minutes
What does LUNAR stand for?
Location, Unit, Name, Air or Assignment, Resources needed
What does PAR stand for?
Personal accountability report is a roll call taken by supervisor

A firefighter is lost, is trapped, has an SCBA failure, or is running out of air
What’s the most important component of firefighter survival?
Communication is a critical part in emergency operations but is especially important to firefighter safety and survival
Define rehabilitation
“Is a systematic process that provides longer periods of rest and recovery in an emergency incident”
Know what a company officer should do if there is a change in the balance of risk/benefit at an incident
“If they perceive the risk/benefit balance has shifted, it is their responsibility to report their observations to the IC.
“The IC must reevaluate the risk/benifit balance if conditions have changed”
