Addiction
Chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.When a person is experiencing the symptoms of tolerance as well as withdrawal to a substance.
Co-occurring Disorders
When a person is diagnosed with a substance use disorder and other psychiatric conditions.
Cravings
A desire (for a drug) that precludes thinking of anything else and is associated with specific reward pathways in the brain. Viewed as sign of impending relapse.
Delirium Tremens (Dt’s)-
Hallucinations and severe tremors which can lead to death.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Condition caused by excessive consumption of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy, characterized by CNS damage, retardation of mental development and of physical growth.
Intoxication Disorder
Short term symptoms associated with current use of the substance, including the problematic behaviors and psychological changes.
Impaired Control
Daily activities revolve around obtaining a substance and recovering from its use. Individual takes more than intended over time, has many unsuccessful attempts to reduce use and a persistent desire to decrease or continue
Pharmacological Criteria
When a person is experiencing the symptoms of tolerance as well as withdrawal to a substance they meet this criteria for addiction.
Risky Use
Consuming substances even when it is physically hazardous and despite knowing that the substance use is causing persistent physical, legal, and or psychological difficulties.
Social Impairment
Persistent substance use associated with the inability to carry out key occupational roles, serious social and interpersonal problems and withdrawal from leisure and other family activities.
Substance Abuse
The state that occurs when the use of a substance leads to failure in carrying out occupational roles, interpersonal and legal problems, and risky behaviors.
Substance/Medication- Induced Disorders
- Medication and Substance induced mental disorders including intoxication, withdrawal, psychotic, depressive, bipolar, anxiety, OCD, sleep, sexual dysfunction, dementia and delirium.
